about

Written specifically for The Wild Center, Totality is designed to sync up perfectly with the total solar eclipse occurring on April 8th, 2024. The pairing of orchestral instruments and synthesizers was used to convey the essence of a phenomenon that is naturally occurring, but feels unnatural and surreal at the same time. Initially written as one 15 minute track, Totality is broken into 4 distinct sections.

“The Approach” sets the stage for the event with lush electric pianos and melancholic violins. “Dawn/Dusk” ratchets up the tension, weaving in multiple motifs as it continuously builds. “Totality,” the eponymous track, is the eclipse itself — a 3 minute and 30 minute movement designed to sync up with the eclipse itself. “What Comes After” is a wistful epilogue, a moment of calm and reflection before the daily distractions begin to set back in again and nature returns to its normal state.

Those of you listening in the Tupper Lake area should start the recording at exactly 3:15 PM. Those of you listening in other areas should consult your local listings for the different specific start/end times of the eclipse. The title track “Totality” is designed for the eclipse proper. If you are listening in a different location you should start the album from the beginning 10 minutes prior. If you are listening to this after the eclipse has happened — close your eyes and imagine an event bigger than yourself that will continue long after we are gone.
